One UI Watch 5, the upcoming significant update for the Galaxy Watch, is currently rolling out to the Galaxy Watch 5. The update will soon be available for the Galaxy Watch 4 series as well. Based on Wear OS 4, One UI Watch 5 adds a number of new features and enhancements to the current lineup of Galaxy Watches.
Unfortunately, this upgrade will not be available for Wear OS 3-powered Galaxy smartwatches produced before 2021, such as the Galaxy Watch 3 and Watch 2 Active. Users of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3 will receive a new software update that will include a few new watch faces from the Galaxy Watch 6, yet Samsung has a little surprise in store for them.
Now, users of Tizen OS can appreciate One UI Watch 5 watch faces.
In order to develop a new Wear OS platform for its smartwatches, Samsung worked with Google. The Galaxy Watch 4 series were the first smartwatches to make use of this platform. Since then, this platform has formed the foundation for all of the company’s new Galaxy Watch software.
However, this makes the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3 older Samsung smartwatches useless. These smartwatches come pre-loaded with Samsung’s own Tizen OS, and the new Wear OS platform will never be made available for them.
The firm has revealed that the Stretched Time and Perpetual watch faces from OneUI Watch 5 will also be launched for the older Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3, so it appears that it hasn’t forgotten about its earlier Tizen smartwatches.
Samsung stated that these new watch faces would be available “this autumn” for its Tizen OS smartwatches. The business hasn’t yet provided a precise release date, though.
