When Extensions Are Taken Down From the Chrome Web Store

A new safety check function is being added to Chrome 117 by Google Chrome. If an extension you’ve installed is taken down from the Chrome Web Store, this feature will let you know. A number of factors can cause an extension to be withdrawn from the Chrome Web Store, including the developer’s decision to stop publishing it, a policy violation, or the presence of malware. But you might not be informed of the cause for an extension’s removal from the Chrome Web Store. In order to remedy this, Chrome wishes to let you know why the add-on was taken down.

More openness about removed addons will be provided by Chrome.
A new policy was explained in an essay written by Oliver Dunk, a Chrome Extensions Developer Relations Engineer, on the Chrome Developer blog. Users who have installed extensions will receive a notification from Google Chrome when those extensions are no longer accessible. On the Safety Check page under Chrome’s Privacy and Security Settings (chrome://settings/privacy), the message will be visible.

You will get a banner message, for instance, if Chrome removes an extension. To view a list of disabled extensions and the reasons why they were deleted, go to chrome://extensions and select the “Review” button. If you want to keep using the extension, you may either opt to hide the warning or delete it completely.

However, Google will provide developers a window of time to fix any problems that might have caused their extension to be taken down from the Chrome Web Store.

Google stated in a different blog post that it would update all HTTP links to HTTPS automatically. HTTPS is a more secure version of HTTP that encrypts your communication. Even if you go on a link that clearly states HTTP, this will still take place. According to Google, Chrome will fall back to HTTP if an upgrade fails to take place. This modification is now being tested by Google in Chrome 115, and it will soon be available to everyone.
