According to a report, a senior official from MeitY said in a statement that businesses and traders can import IT hardware, laptops, tablets, and other products because there is no ban on them.

On Thursday, the Indian government placed limits on the import of servers, tablets, and laptops. A top official for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has now made it clear that businesses and dealers can continue to import these products without facing any restrictions.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced the crackdown on imports on Thursday, warning that electronic products that fell under the HSN 8741 category, including personal computers, microcomputers, automatic data processing machines, and mainframe computers, would be restricted and would need a licence for restricted imports that was in good standing.
No import limitations
However, a senior MeitY official clarified that imports are not prohibited and that the Directorate General of Foreign Trade’s (DGFT) online licence gateway is now operational. Companies can obtain an authorised import licence that is good for a year in about 5 minutes. The MeitY representative disclosed that one company has already submitted numerous licence applications.
“Prices of these goods – laptops, tablets, personal computers, and so on – will not rise, and there will be no disruption to goods in transit,” he stated, according to a LiveMint story.
Despite the import limitations, the Indian government has granted exemptions for certain commodities. Import licences have been waived for up to 20 products per consignment for R&D testing, benchmarking and evaluation, repair and re-export, and product development reasons.
This is a positive step.
The Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) has applauded the Indian government’s decision to impose import limits on electronics such as laptops, tablets, and servers. This, according to the group, is a critical step towards improving national security and lowering reliance on foreign imports.
“This notification is a welcome move from the government to boost manufacturing in India, promoting make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in IT hardware products,” said Sanjay Agarwal, President of ELCINA. More emphasis will be placed on improving R&D, Technology, and design, which will lead to India becoming self-sufficient with a strong supply chain network in IT Hardware.”
