We’ve long been fans of Onyx Boox ereader and tablet products, especially the Boox Nova Air C, which is one of our top selections for the finest ereader. The business is pushing its E Ink even closer to full-featured tablet territory by adding features we would anticipate on a tablet like the iPad 10.9. The Air C includes a colour LCD layer on top of the black and white E Ink.
A 16MP camera on the back of the 10.3-inch Onyx Boox Tab Ultra is a feature we would never anticipate pairing with an E Ink display. Although Onyx did a fantastic job making the Boox Tab Ultra move as quickly as possible, E Ink is rather slow to update. The tablet has an 8-core Qualcomm processor and a GPU that, according to Onyx, was designed specifically for the tablet’s screen to have quicker refresh rates.
We anticipate that the camera won’t be utilised for typical photography. Onyx emphasises the sensor’s ability to take pictures of and scan documents instead, which is more in line with modern technology. How well the E Ink manages the camera’s viewfinder functions is something we’re interested in.
We found the Note Air 2 to be a superb digital note-taking gadget, and Onyx claims that the Boox Tab Ultra builds off of the Note Air 2 Plus spec. The Boox Tab Ultra comes with a stylus, and Onyx smartly chooses to remain with Wacom-style EMR technology rather than choosing proprietary technology, like Apple and Microsoft do. Samsung’s S Pen stylus makes use of this technology.
The tablet oddly uses Android 11, which is two versions older than the most recent Android 13 release. It seems unlikely that such a special offering will receive consistent updates, but maybe Onyx can keep the Tab Ultra safe.
The Boox Tab Ultra has 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, which should be more than enough to run programmes on the monochrome display. Onyx gladly offers a microSD card slot, so don’t worry about running out of room.
On October 27, the Boox Tab Ultra will go on sale in the Boox online store. In the US, the tablet will cost ₹49430.39. Pricing is not currently available in any of our other preferred markets.
Onyx is updating some of its other well-known E Ink tablets in addition to the Tab Ultra. The Boox Nova Air, which we described as “cute-looking, super-slim, and wonderfully flexible 7.8-inch tablet for digital note-takers on the go,” has been updated with the Nova Air 2.
The new gadget supports the Onyx Pen Plus stylus and boasts a 7.8-inch E Ink display, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage space. Although we’re still anticipating pricing in other markets, the Nova Air 2 will cost ₹32953.32 in the US.
The company’s more basic line of ereading devices has been updated with the Onyx Boox Leaf 2. This reading gadget has page turning buttons in place of a stylus and is updated. A microSD card slot, 32GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, and a 7-inch display are all included. The Leaf 2 costs ₹16476.25n the US; prices for other markets aren’t yet known.
