Source: DH picture The edict requiring kids to attend high school in Karnataka has been put on hold by the department of school education and literacy have reached the age of six by June 1 in order to enrol in Class 1.
The law will go into effect beginning with the school year 2025–2026. After discovering that some youngsters seeking enrollment into Class 1 at state schools for the upcoming academic year might be impacted, the agency opted to postpone the age rule.
School Education and Literacy Minister B C Nagesh stated at a press conference that the order will go into effect for the 2025–2026 school year and that the relaxation would last for the following two years.
The minister stated that specialists and paediatricians have advised against enrolling young children in school before the age of six. “Sending children younger than six to school will put unneeded pressure on them The Class 1 entry age is set at six years old in at least 23 states. We are also keeping an eye on this, he said.
Many kindergarteners this year will be relieved by the two-year suspension of the age restriction. During the 2023–2024 school year, children in lower kindergarten will be in Class 1 and those in upper kindergarten will be in Class 1 Lower kindergarteners will be in Class 1 in 2024–25 academic year, while those in Class 1 in 2023–24 will be in lower kindergarten.
For Class 1 admissions beginning with the 2023–24 academic year, the department had issued an order in July requiring that children be six years old by June 1. This order caused uncertainty and concern among parents.
