A Much-Needed Battery Upgrade For The Samsung Galaxy S23 May Be Forthcoming

The Samsung Galaxy S22’s battery is smaller than its predecessor’s for reasons that are unknown to everyone but Samsung; it measures just 3,700mAh, however it appears the corporation may be reconsidering this decision for the Samsung Galaxy S23.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 will have a 3,900mAh battery, according to Digital Chat Station, a leaker with a respectable track record, in a post on the Chinese social media website Weibo(opens in new tab), discovered by Pocket Lint(opens in new tab). Thus, there are 200mAh more than the Galaxy S22, which while not a significant improvement, would be ideal.

Even then, the phone won’t have a particularly large battery. The 4,000mAh battery in the Samsung Galaxy S21 is about what we’d anticipate from a small-screen flagship, but at least this would be a step back in the right direction.

The insider also claims that the Samsung Galaxy S23’s quick charging will be “a touch worse” than that of “local” – presumably Chinese – small-screen flagships and that the device will have a 6.1-inch 1080p screen, as expected, just like its predecessor.

The Galaxy S23 will offer only 25W charging, much like its predecessor, according to information we’ve heard elsewhere. However, they don’t indicate what the charging speed is. It is hardly surprising that Samsung phones charge more slowly than the majority of those from other brands.

Although none of this has been confirmed as of yet, it is consistent with what we might anticipate given the company’s past performance and suggests that the standard Galaxy S model won’t once again stand out for its battery life or charging speed, although the former may be at least marginally better than the S22.

Analysis: Two out of three batteries need to be upgraded

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s potential battery capacity were previously revealed by leaks, and while one of these is supposedly receiving an upgrade, the other isn’t.

According to a leak, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus would reportedly have a 4,700mAh battery, 200mAh higher than the Galaxy S22 Plus and the same potential capacity increase as the Samsung Galaxy S23. Similar to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, it would still have 100mAh less capacity after that.

In contrast, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a 5,000mAh battery, the same as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Samsung has therefore maintained consistency there at least.

This is sensible given that a large-screen flagship typically has a battery capacity of 5,000mAh; nonetheless, we’d want to see the business commit to providing larger batteries in both the basic and Plus models.

These leaks do at least suggest progress in that area, giving them a decent chance to be counted among the top Samsung smartphones.
