The MSI GT77 Titan claims to be the pinnacle of gaming laptop evolution, which has advanced at an alarming rate. This gaming laptop is undoubtedly a massive machine in terms of features, cost, and size, and it appears to be every PC gamer’s ideal computer. The GT77 Titan has a lot of potential, but due to its bulk and obscenely loud noise, I find it difficult to recommend it.
The RTX 3080 Ti and Intel’s i9-12900HX processor, the most potent laptop GPU and CPU currently on the market, are installed in one mammoth 17.3-inch laptop. The GT77 Titan costs over $4,800 (around £4,200, AU$7,000), which is a lot of money to spend—especially when you take into account the significant shortcomings that come with this laptop. While some users would choose the most cutting-edge, potent equipment, I can’t say it’s worth it when you can get models with comparable processing capability for less money and weight.
The MSI GT77 Titan is not the most portable laptop ever, to put it simply. You will notice the weight of this 7.2 lbs machine if you try to lug it around; I carried this machine in a bag from the office to my house. Unless you have a sturdy large laptop bag to carry it around in, the 330-watt power brick worsens the situation and further reduces the portability.
Having said that, there are many things to commend about this gaming laptop. Together with the colourful RGB lights on the keyboard and the device’s rear, the 4K display is breathtaking. With Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile mechanical key switches, which are a real delight to type on and offer a deeply rewarding tactile experience, these LEDs are connected with the keyboard.
MSI GT77 TITAN: PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Currently, there is some uncertainty regarding the MSI GT77 Titan’s availability, especially for UK-based customers.
The Core i9 and RTX 3080 Ti-equipped test machine MSI provided us with is not the one that will be sold in the UK at the time of writing. Instead, MSI will provide a separate model with a Core i7 and RTX 3080 Ti for the UK market. In November, this model will go on sale for £3,899 (about $4,500 or AU$ 6,700).
The UK, US, and Australia are not on the list of countries where the MSI GT77 Titan is currently available for purchase, so we will just have to wait till additional information is released.
The MSI GT77 is priced at a nearly excruciatingly high level and is significantly more expensive than other laptops with comparable or identical characteristics. For a third of the cost of the Titan, the Lenovo Legion 7 (Gen 6) laptop, for instance, has the same performance and parts. There are several excellent gaming laptops that cost a lot less.
When a laptop costs £3,899, it begs the question, “Who is this laptop truly for?” There isn’t much to justify its price other than the fact that you possess a beast like this one because it is neither particularly affordable nor fully distinctive in its internal hardware.
MSI TITAN GT77: DESIGN
The MSI GT77 Titan has a striking gaming appearance and a highly retro-futuristic style at first glance. At first glance, the laptop’s 3-inch protrusion at the back seems a little unusual, but thanks to the Mystic Light RGB system, which can be customised using the SteelSeries GG software, the keyboard and air vents light up in a variety of ways according to user desire. It manages the RGB per-key on the keyboard for incredibly customisable use.
The laptop’s 4K 120Hz gaming display offers clear image quality and performed admirably with the games we tested it with. It also has HDMI, Thunderbolt, and four mini Display Ports, so you can spread your workspace across up to four screens.
The MSI GT77’s included trackpad is simple to operate and provides the same tactile delight as the keyboard; it is also rather wide, which facilitates easy user interaction. It’s convenient to be able to pinch away from open apps on the trackpad and arrange notifications by “desktops.” With a laptop this expensive, you probably want to use it for both work and play, and this function lets you do just that.
The Cherry switch mechanical keyboard, which is unique to this model, is a standout feature of this laptop. The typing sound is almost identical to that of a desktop keyboard, which supports my claim that this monster is a fantastic desktop replacement laptop.
For simple login, I’d also want to draw attention to the biometric fingerprint reader and webcam with facial recognition. It’s a rather clever security feature that shows design flexibility, suggesting that it may be applied to more situations besides gaming and is practical for quick and simple access.
Overall, I believe the MSI GT77 Titan is a visually appealing laptop that can differentiate itself from other gaming laptops that include a similar rugged design and RGB combinations without being strange or monotonous. It has a very distinctive appearance that aficionados would adore, but the weight of it again negates all of this. If you’re willing to pay the price, this would make a terrific desktop replacement.
MSI GT77 TITAN: BATTERY LIFE
With a 99.9whr battery, as the GT77 Titan claims to have, most laptops should be able to operate for six to nine hours.
During our benchmarking process, our review model lasted about three hours, which may be usual for gaming laptops but is very disappointing for a high-end laptop with a hefty price tag.
Although it may have been a problem with our model specifically, the review model we received did not seem to perform well with our battery benchmarks, which is odd for a laptop with this kind of battery capability. Overall, this laptop’s battery life is about average.
