At the Ryzen 7000 launch event yesterday, AMD made some sweeping statements. One of the slides displayed the Geekbench results for the Zen 4 processors, all of which outperformed the Core i9-12900K based on Alder Lake. First-party assertions should typically be regarded with scepticism, but it appears that AMD wasn’t kidding around this time. Geekbench has the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, and it runs precisely as AMD predicted.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X achieves a single-core score of 2,217 in Geekbench, just a few points below the 2,275 amount announced on stage. The processor scored 24,396 points on the multi-core test, so things appear to be going well. A recent Geekbench listing verified that the Raptor Lake-based Core i9-13900K scored 2,169 and 24,189 in the single and multi-core tests, respectively. The test bench was running an undisclosed Asus board coupled with 32 GB of 6,000 MT/s DDR5 RAM.
This is quite competitive with the Ryzen 9 7950X. Team Red’s achievement is made even more remarkable by the fact that, although having only 16 cores, it can keep up with a 24-core processor. Nevertheless, it is impossible to compare the two directly because the Core i9-13900K has a combination of performance and efficiency cores.
However, Geekbench isn’t the best benchmarking programme available because it doesn’t put the CPUs under enough sustained stress, which eliminates critical elements like thermal throttling and sustained power draw. Fortunately, the Core i9-13900K has previously undergone significant testing in other programmes like Cinebench. The Ryzen 9 7950X will soon be put to the test, enabling a more thorough comparison between the two industry leaders.
