According to recent rumors on the grapevine, Apple abandoned the notion of a Mac mini based on the M1 Pro SoC (System-on-a-Chip), but the company is currently working on a novel take on the compact PC powered by M2 processors.
This information comes from renowned Apple leaker Mark Gurman, who notes in his Power On newsletter (opens in new tab) for Bloomberg that Apple was developing a Mac mini with M1 Pro that was slated to debut at the end of 2021 or the start of 2022.
Theoretically, Apple abandoned the device—a decision that was probably connected to the launch of the Mac Studio—and is now working on Mac mini variants that will employ the M2 SoC and the M2 Pro, both of which have previously surfaced in rumours. Of course, that never occurred.
Therefore, it appears that individuals who have been waiting for an upgraded Mac mini may have to continue waiting for a lot longer than what Apple’s apparent initial aim was. However, the final product will be better because the M2 silicon is a significant improvement over the M1 silicon, and presumably, the M2 Pro SoC should further increase the level of oomph from there (although we haven’t seen the M2 Pro yet).
